Landmarks — and a first date that is not a parking lot
Meet in daylight, in public. Do not go to a private apartment first. Do not send money for a “visa”, “ticket” or “Uber”.
- Toronto. CN Tower and the waterfront path: lots of people, easy to leave. A coffee near Union Station beats a late bar as meeting one.
- Niagara Falls is a day trip from Toronto, not a first-date hotel. If you go, go as tourists in a crowd, not because a stranger booked a room.
- Vancouver. Stanley Park seawall or Granville Island in the afternoon. Rain is normal; a mall food court is still better than a basement suite.
- Montreal. Old Port and the old town streets — public, walkable, bilingual. Say if you only speak English; it is fine.
- Calgary. Stephen Avenue or a busy cafe, not a mountain cabin with someone you met yesterday. Banff is a weekend, not a first hello.
- Ottawa. Parliament Hill lawn in good weather, ByWard Market when it is cold.
Films, faces, why “Hollywood North” shows up in search
Vancouver is often called Hollywood North: Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds is from Vancouver) shot a lot there. Alberta stood in for wilderness in The Revenant and parts of Brokeback Mountain. Toronto played itself in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Drake is from Toronto; Céline Dion from Charlemagne, Quebec; Keanu Reeves grew up in Toronto. None of that is a dating guarantee. It is the country you are actually standing in — maple, snow, and a film industry that makes the city names show up in Google.
